Why I Built MovingBox

The story behind MovingBox: how a real insurance claim disaster led to building an AI-powered home inventory app that protects what matters most.

Why I Built MovingBox

Last year, a friend of mine lost everything in a house fire. When the insurance adjuster showed up, they asked a simple question: “Can you prove what you owned?”

She couldn’t. Not really. She had some photos on her phone, a few receipts in her email, and a vague mental inventory of furniture and electronics. But “vague” doesn’t cut it when you’re filing a claim for $80,000 in personal property.

The insurance company paid out less than half of what she actually lost.

The Problem Nobody Talks About

Most homeowners have $100,000+ in personal property. But here’s what insurance companies don’t advertise:

  • 70% of homeowners are underinsured because they don’t know what they actually own
  • Claims without documentation get denied or delayed — sometimes for months
  • Insurance adjusters start with the assumption you’re exaggerating

My friend wasn’t exaggerating. She just couldn’t prove it.

The Existing Solutions Suck

After her experience, I looked into home inventory apps. Here’s what I found:

Spreadsheets: Tedious manual entry. Nobody actually maintains these.

Generic inventory apps: Designed for warehouse managers, not homeowners. Overkill features, underwhelming UX.

Video inventory services: $80+/year, and you still have to do the work of walking through your house with a camera. Plus, good luck searching through hours of footage to find that one item.

None of them solved the core problem: making it effortless to document what you own.

Building Something Better

I’m a developer. I build iOS apps. And I realized the technology to solve this problem already existed — nobody had just put it together the right way.

Here’s what I wanted:

  1. Zero typing. Take a photo, AI identifies the item. Done.
  2. Automatic value estimates. No research required.
  3. Organization that just works. By room, by category, searchable.
  4. Export when you need it. Insurance-ready reports in one tap.
  5. Privacy first. Your data stays on your device and iCloud. No servers, no tracking.

That became MovingBox.

How It Works

The core insight: AI can identify objects from photos. Not just “this is a chair” but “this is a Herman Miller Aeron chair, model B, estimated value $1,200.”

Here’s the flow:

  1. Snap a photo of any item (or group of items)
  2. AI extracts brand, model, description, estimated value
  3. Everything organized by room automatically
  4. Export anytime as a professional ZIP with photos and spreadsheet

Documenting your entire home takes 30 minutes, not 30 hours.

The Business Model

MovingBox is free for up to 50 items — enough to test it out, document your most valuable possessions.

MovingBox Pro unlocks unlimited items, multi-item scanning (point at a shelf, get 10 items at once), and advanced AI models. At $3.18/month (annual), it’s cheaper than a single coffee — and it could save you tens of thousands in a claim.

I also offer a lifetime purchase option because I hate subscriptions when they don’t make sense. If you’re documenting your home once for insurance purposes, you shouldn’t pay forever.

Privacy By Architecture

Here’s something important: MovingBox has no servers.

Your photos, your inventory data, everything — it all stays on your device and syncs through iCloud. I literally cannot access your data even if I wanted to. (I don’t.)

This isn’t just privacy-washing. It’s architectural. Competitors store your home inventory on their servers. I don’t want that liability, and you shouldn’t want that exposure.

What’s Next

This is a build-in-public journey. I’ll be sharing:

  • Development updates and technical deep-dives
  • Marketing experiments (what works, what doesn’t)
  • Revenue milestones and lessons learned
  • Features as they ship

The goal isn’t just to build a successful app — it’s to show how it’s done.

Get Started

If you own a home, rent an apartment, or have stuff you care about, you need a home inventory. Not because disaster is likely, but because if it happens, you need to be ready.

Document your most valuable 10 items. It takes 5 minutes. That’s 5 minutes that could save you thousands.
