The simplest way to organize inventories across multiple homes is to give each property its own Home in MovingBox, then use the same location pattern inside each one. Your primary residence, cabin, rental, or office stays separate, while All Inventory gives you one place to search across them when you need a wider view.

Multiple Homes are a MovingBox Pro feature. If you only need one property right now, a single Home with clear Spaces, numbered Boxes, and Labels is a perfectly good place to begin.

Start with one Home for each property

Think of a Home as the top-level boundary for a real property. It keeps that property’s inventory, rooms, storage areas, and insurance details together.

In Settings → Manage Homes, tap + New Home. Give it a name you will recognize at a glance, such as Primary Home, Lake Cabin, or Maple Street Rental. You can optionally add an address and photo, then save.

Avoid creating a separate Home for every room, shed, or closet. Those belong inside the relevant property as Spaces. A useful test is simple: if the place has a separate address or you would describe it as a distinct property, it probably deserves its own Home.

Repeat a location pattern that makes sense at every property

After choosing a Home, open Locations and build the structure that matches the physical space. MovingBox uses Spaces for rooms, closets, storage areas, and other places; numbered Boxes sit inside a Space and hold items.

For example, you might use:

  • Primary Home → Basement → Storage Room → Box 12
  • Lake Cabin → Hall Closet → Box 3
  • Maple Street Rental → Kitchen

You do not need identical room names in every Home. Consistency helps, though: use Utility Closet rather than switching among Utility, Cleaning, and Supplies for the same kind of space. Within a Home, Box Numbers must be unique. A Box holds items, not additional Spaces or Boxes, so add another Space when you need another layer.

Keep labels useful across every Home

Labels are global in MovingBox, which means the same Label can be used across your Homes. That makes them helpful for a purpose that crosses property lines: Electronics, Valuable, Shared, or Needs Review, for example.

Each item can have one Label. Use the Home and Space or Box path to answer “where is it?” and reserve the Label for the one category or status you will most often want to filter by. If an item needs a different Label later, changing it replaces the previous one.

Add and review items in the right property

Before adding an item, select the Home where it actually belongs. You can then add it from its Space or Box, which helps the location field start in the right place. When you are reviewing older records, open the item, choose Edit, and update its Location if it has moved.

You can create entries manually or use single-item photo analysis. AI-generated details are suggestions, so review and edit names, quantities, serial numbers, values, and locations before you save.

Basic browsing and manual entry work offline. On supported devices running iOS 27, the On Device Apple Intelligence option can also analyze single-item photos offline. Private Cloud Compute and Gemini need an internet connection, as do multi-item and video analysis. Multi-item and video analysis require MovingBox Pro.

If you use a Box for seasonal or stored items, MovingBox can create a PDF contents sheet for that one Box. It includes the Home and Space path, the Box number, assigned items, and a QR code that opens the matching Box. It is useful for a physical container, but it is not a complete-inventory or insurance-report PDF.

Use All Inventory when the question spans properties

The sidebar’s All Inventory view lets you search and browse items across every Home at once. Use it when you are trying to remember which property holds a particular item, comparing similar items, or doing a broader review.

For day-to-day cataloging, switch back to the specific Home. That keeps new records and location choices grounded in the physical place you are working through instead of turning one list into a catch-all.

Keep insurance details separate and review your setup

Each Home can store its own insurance policy information. Add only the details you want on hand, and confirm them against your current policy documents rather than treating the inventory as coverage advice. MovingBox can help you keep records organized; it does not determine coverage or guarantee a claim outcome.

A calm next step: add the property that is hardest to keep straight, then create just its main Spaces. Once that outline looks familiar, add items a room or Box at a time. You can use All Inventory later to see the whole picture without giving up the structure that makes each Home easy to manage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Labels separate for each Home?

No. Labels are global, so they can be used across your Homes. An item can have one Label at a time.
