How to Check That Everything Arrived After a Move

Use a simple room-by-room inventory check to confirm what arrived, find what still needs attention, and keep unpacking organized.

The simplest way to check that everything arrived after a move is to compare what you unpack with an inventory organized by room or destination. Work through one Space at a time, update the items you find, and make a short list of anything that still needs a second look. You do not have to finish the whole house before you can start getting clarity.

Start with a calm first pass

Before opening every box, walk through your new place and note the areas that need attention. Focus first on the rooms and items you need right away, then return to less urgent spaces when you have time.

If you used MovingBox before the move, open Locations and check the Spaces you set up for rooms or storage areas. Numbered Boxes sit inside those Spaces and hold the items you packed. If your new rooms have different names or uses, you can rename or move Spaces and Boxes, or edit an item’s Location as you unpack.

Check one Space at a time

Pick one destination room and give it a simple pass:

  1. Bring the boxes and loose items for that room together.
  2. Open the matching Space in Locations, then check its numbered Boxes and loose items.
  3. As you unpack, look for each important item in the list.
  4. Update its Location if it landed somewhere new.
  5. Leave a note for anything you want to inspect, clean, assemble, or locate later.

This keeps the task small. A kitchen can be complete even while the garage is still a work in progress.

Use numbered Boxes to trace what you packed

Open the matching numbered Box in MovingBox and compare its assigned items with what you unpack. If you attached a printed Box contents list, use its number and Home/Space path to identify it. You can scan the list’s QR code to open the current Box record. The printed list covers that Box, not your entire inventory.

Keep an item assigned to its Box until you unpack it, then edit its Location to select the Space where it now belongs. Labels remain available for categories or other useful groupings, such as “Electronics.” Each item has one Label, independent of its Space or Box assignment.

Give important items a closer review

For valuable, fragile, or hard-to-replace belongings, take a little extra time before putting them away. Open the item record and review its name, description, photos, and identifying details. You can edit those details, add notes, update purchase information, or enter a serial number when needed.

If a record was created with AI assistance, treat the suggested details as a starting point. Review and correct important names, values, and identifiers yourself. AI value estimates are approximate; for high-value items, consider a professional valuation when that level of documentation matters.

Make a short “follow up” list

Some items will not be easy to confirm on moving day. Instead of stopping the whole check, capture what you know:

  • The item or group you still need to find
  • The last box, room, or Location you expect it to be in
  • Any visible damage or detail you want to revisit
  • Whether you need a clearer photo, manual entry, or a corrected record

For an item that is difficult to identify or was not captured before the move, you can add it manually and optionally attach a photo. That gives you a place to keep the detail without waiting for a perfect inventory session.

Finish with a useful inventory, not a perfect one

When each room has had a pass, your inventory will be more useful because it reflects where things actually ended up. You can keep refining it as you settle in: add missed items, reassign Locations, and adjust Labels to fit your new home.

The goal is a clear record you can use, one room and one box at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if an item is not in the room where I expected it?

Open the relevant numbered Box, or scan its printed QR code, and compare its assigned items with what you have unpacked. If the item is not there, search your inventory and review its saved Space or Box. If you find it elsewhere, edit the item’s Location to match. If you still cannot find it, leave a note so you can return to it after the next round of unpacking.

Can I check my inventory without an internet connection?

Yes. You can browse existing inventory and add items manually offline. On supported devices running iOS 27, the On Device Apple Intelligence provider can also analyze single-item photos offline. Private Cloud Compute and Gemini need a connection; if Private Cloud Compute loses connectivity, MovingBox retries on device when available. Multi-item and video analysis use Gemini, require Pro, and need a connection.

Can I assign a Box and an item category at the same time?

Yes. Set the item’s Location to its numbered Box, and use its Label for a category such as “Electronics.” The Box assignment does not replace the Label. Each item can still have only one Label.
